Just a short drive from Seattle, in the bustling Kirkland suburb, Molly and Jason Mesnick‘s new custom home perfectly captures the essence of the Pacific Northwest and modern-day comforts. Known from Season 13 of “The Bachelor,” the Washington-based realtors embarked on a journey to transform their rental property into a dream custom home that catered to their love for entertaining and their family’s proclivity for indoor-outdoor living, primarily envisioned and designed by Molly herself. The result is a 4,010 sq ft contemporary abode, with warm and welcoming interiors, eye-catching feature walls, a dream backyard oasis for indoor-outdoor living, and a flexible bifold door to blur the lines between inside and out.
“I chose NanaWall because they are the pioneers in bifold doors and have perfected the technology,” says Molly. “We opted for Generation 4, which offers a slimmer profile for more window view—it’s incredibly easy and light to open.”

A Home for Living, Entertaining, and Memorable Experiences
For the Mesnicks, the design process began months ahead with intensive research going into material choice, exterior home design, interior layout, smart home inclusions, and even fenestration styles. Working alongside Architects Northwest and Jason Reid from Reid Custom Homes, Molly’s original vision developed into a two-story property with dedicated interiors to accommodate the family’s multifaceted lifestyle. At first sight, the new build can be described as a transitional style home with classy black and white James Hardie lap siding and elegant, natural stone accents. All elements that Molly considered when selecting the all-black roofing. “I wanted this home to be able to stand the test of time, so Transitional was the perfect fit,” says Molly. “We’ve got a good blend of classic and modern throughout.”
Functional Rooms for Modern-Day Living
The 5 bedroom, 4.5 bath home was designed with as many modern comforts as the square footage allowed. Upon entry, a statement-making waterfall light illuminates the double-height foyer and staircase. True to a transitional style home, the interior spaces combine traditional and modern design elements with open concept layouts and large windows to welcome natural light. Each room seamlessly flows into the other, especially the kitchen and family room where a NanaWall bifold door allows the spaces to spill into a functional covered patio for outdoor living. Throughout the home, Hewn honey-colored wood flooring adds a touch of warmth and timeless elegance while complementing Molly’s interior design choices.
Warm Tones, Mixed Metals, and Carefully Crafted Details
For the home’s interior design, Molly envisioned a carefully curated blend of warm tones, mixed metals, and the occasional statement-making wall. Pendant lighting fixtures adorn nearly every room of the home, working in tandem with neutral furniture selections to create a warm and homey ambiance. Various pops of greenery can be seen throughout, which when paired with the natural wood accents, alludes to the beauty of the outdoors. Everything from cabinet fixtures to fabric materials, and even personal touches like the head-turning photo gallery wall in the living room, offers a perfect balance of carefully curated décor with meaningful design elements.
Designing a Dream Kitchen Space for Everyday Living
The kitchen is a vibrant hub designed with family and entertainment in mind. The 18-by-18-foot space features dual islands, one designated for cooking and prep, while the other doubles as a secondary dining area for family meals or entertaining friends. Della Terra Quartz, Calacatta Capella countertops add a touch of elegance and symmetry. Custom pull-out drawers by Hyland Cabinet Works provide ample, organized storage, while Monogram appliances add modern convenience, including dual dishwashers and a WiFi-connected range. Honey bronze hardware and artisan subway tile backsplash, extending to the ceiling, lend a timeless, cohesive aesthetic. Modern comforts include a 48” range and hood insert with a convenient pot filler above the stove as well as a prep sink and cleanup sink. Tying it all together, wicker-inspired pendant lighting harmonizes with warm wood tones and creates a kitchen that truly embodies the heart of the home.
Formal Dining Room for Memorable Gatherings
“The reason why we pretty much built this whole house—we entertain all the time,” says Molly. “I host all the family gatherings, all the holiday parties, and so I needed a space for more people to sit down and have dinner.” The formal dining room brings this vision to life with bold design choices like the custom wine rack by Mila Zim Vintage, holding up to 128 bottles and doubling as an artful focal point. Painted in Sherwin Williams’ Iron Ore, with matching trim, the dark tones establish an elegant, cohesive aesthetic. A 93-inch dining table comfortably seats eight, paired with boucle-upholstered chairs, bringing in all the elements to achieve a sophisticated, restaurant-like vibe for memorable gatherings. For even more entertaining space or quiet family moments, a fully equipped media room offers the ideal spot for cozy movie nights.
The Primary Suite: Personalized Spaces for Ultimate Comfort
Upstairs, the bedrooms reflect Molly’s goal of creating homey spaces with a color and texture palette that exudes tranquility and warmth with the occasional bold touch of jet-black fixtures and wall accents. The primary bedroom, complete with an ensuite bathroom, lounge space, and his and her walk-in closets offers a personalized retreat for winding down. Molly partnered with Closets by Design to turn her closet into a boutique-inspired space, complete with custom jewelry drawers and pull-out hampers. Adding to the functionality, the closet spaces offer direct access to a conveniently located washer and dryer room. Meanwhile, as a complete surprise for her husband, Jason Mesnick’s closet steals the show with a striking Air Jordan display wall, featuring LED strip lighting and acrylic doors to showcase his prized sneaker collection in style.
Cozy Bedroom Spaces for Kids and Guests
The kids’ bedrooms were designed to reflect their unique personalities and hobbies. The daughter’s room features a pastel palette and playful elements like a swing chair suspended from the ceiling and Taylor Swift paraphernalia. Meanwhile, the college-age son’s room showcases a more mature design with bold colors, textured finishes, and sports-related décor. On the main floor, the guest suite provides a welcoming retreat with cozy bamboo bedding, a stylish chandelier, and furnishings that balance affordability and elegance. Thoughtful additions such as books, cozy blankets, phone chargers, and stocked drawers ensure comfort, and the ensuite bathroom—with matte tiles, curated amenities, and a walk-in closet—takes guest accommodations to the next level.
The Living Room: A Versatile Space
Being the space where the family spends most of their time in, the living room is an ever-evolving, central room that transitions to the kitchen and outdoor patio. The room pairs mixed materials like wood, rich velvet, and creamy upholstery to create a warm, inviting ambiance. Custom built-ins, floating shelves, and seasonal décor personalize the space, in tandem with the custom natural stone fireplace. Designed with both functionality and comfort in mind, the piece de resistance is the featured NanaWall Generation 4 bifold door that filters in natural light and connects to the outdoors.
“It’s not just a wall of windows that brings in tons of natural light, but when open, it expands our living space to the covered patio—perfect for entertaining, especially in the summer,” says Molly. “This bifold door was my number one wish list item for our house—I am absolutely obsessed with it.”
A Dream Family Sanctuary: The Covered Patio and Backyard
The covered patio took a turn from the initial vision of concrete or pavers since the property’s sloped lot would have required a costly foundation. Instead, the Mesnicks opted for composite decking in a color that matched the interior floors to create a visually appealing flow between spaces, facilitated by the 8-foot-tall bifold door. The stone fireplace, a nearly exact copy of the one in the living room, and outdoor heater extend the use of this space well past summer. Comfortable lounge furniture, a TV, and an outdoor dining table replicate the comforts of indoor living but outdoors. Down a veranda, the well-manicured backyard features a vibrant Turf lawn, with plenty of space for Jason to enjoy chipping golf balls, a large trampoline for the kids, and a fire pit for making smores or enjoying family time by a cozy fire. “This is where we spend 90% of our time,” says Molly. “I’ll come out here and have my morning coffee, I’ll read a book out here in the afternoon, and then at nighttime, our whole family is outside enjoying every aspect of this backyard.”
Generation 4 Bifold Door System Elevates Dream Patio Space
The five-panel NanaWall bifold door system creates a functional 15-foot-wide opening that instantly transforms the covered patio into an extension of the living room, with Jet Black aluminum frames that complement the home’s interior design. During cold weather, when the panels are kept closed, a convenient swing door facilitates transitions between spaces. The bifold door system also features a barefoot-friendly Low Profile Saddle sill and double-glazed panels for superior weather performance and energy efficiency, making it the practical choice for the Mesnick’s dream sanctuary backyard space—not to mention the most commented-on item in the home.
“Having the swing door allows us to use our NanaWall multiple ways,” says Molly. “It gives us the flexibility to simply go in and out, without fully opening the door. Many times, we’ll leave the swing door open for easy in and out when we’re on the patio as well!”
A Home Built for Living and Entertaining in Perfect Harmony
Molly and Jason Mesnick’s custom home is a harmonious blend of functionality, style, and personal touches that reflect their family’s lifestyle and love for entertaining. From thoughtfully designed living spaces and statement feature walls to the inviting covered patio and backyard sanctuary, every detail was carefully curated to enhance comfort, livability, and resale value (remember they are realtors after all). In the living room, the Generation 4 bifold door serves as a centerpiece, redefining how the home interacts with the outdoors while offering energy efficiency and space flexibility. Whether hosting family gatherings or enjoying quiet evenings with loved ones, the home redefines what it means to truly live and entertain—inside, outside, and everywhere in between.
